Parent trying to cope....

My son has been a heroin addict for about 3 years now.

He is now 20 and in CT he is considered an adult which, we have found, means that until getting caught breaking the law, you are very limited in options if the person refuses help. After several detoxes and a few tries at outpatient recovery, he was caught buying the stuff and was forced to go to in patient re-hab for 6 months along with probation afterword. He did well and stayed clean the whole time in re-hab.

Upon his return home he began associating with some of his 'old buddies' and started using again. To make a long story shorter, tonight was the 2nd time in 2 months we found him passed out on the bathroom floor. We are smart enough to check on him every few minutes and when he didn't answer we found him on the floor. My wife called 911 while I pounded on his heart and she started CPR and he came to after a minute or so (it seemed much longer). It's very hard to describe the feeling of not knowing if your son will revive.... The police arrived before the paramedics and they found some H in the bathroom. The first time this happened, we went through the same thing but since he was fully functional (and no drugs were found), he refused the strong recommendation that he go to the hospital to make sure he was all right. This time even though he refused at first, due to his history and the possession of H, they convinced him to go and he was going to be seen by a psychiatrist (not just an ER doctor). The policeman said they may or may not keep him overnight... The kid almost dies twice and they'll just release him...

What's next? Death or jail???
